Santry Success 2024

22 pupils from 4th, 5th and 6th class took part in the Inter schools’ athletics competition in Morton Stadium last Wednesday. First up Marcel and Viktorija competed in the Under 12 80 metre sprints while Kate and Seán ran in the Under 14 category.

We were delighted when Kate and Marcel both qualified for the final from their heats. Marcel took home the gold medal from his category while Kate was unlucky after a fantastic sprint in the final.

Carla and Leon then took to the track to compete in a 600 m race in the under 14 category. Despite being younger than many of the athletes competing, they finished their long distance runs really well.

Afterwards Saoirse, Viktorija, Florence, Isla and Poppi’s team competed in the Under 12 relay. They had a fantastic start in lane 7 and were just pipped at the post for a place in the final.

Our under 14 girls Isabella, Molly, Aoibheann, Emma and Kate had a really competitive heat and were disappointed not to make it to the final in their category.

Seán, Lorcan, Hasan, Nathan and Joseph were happy to start in lane 4 for their heat in the Under 14 category but again the competition at this age was outstanding and even with a great run in each leg it just wasn’t enough to make it to the final.

Despite being unlucky with three teams in the relays, we all were delighted with the performance of our under 12 boys relay team. They were placed second in their heat so Marcel, Edison, Omar, John and Féilim knew it was not going to be an easy run in the final.

All pupils gathered at the start line to cheer on the boys and each of the 4 runners ran superbly with Edison faced a real challenge going into the final 100 metres. It was neck and neck between HCNS and Esker ETNS right up to the finish line but Edison knew just what to do to get his head over the line first.

All our supporters were jumping and screaming with joy as the first ever cup was being brought back to our school. It was some achievement for the boys to be placed first out of 31 schools within this category. Each of the 22 team members had a part to play in this success as we had trained together as a team for the month of May encouraging each other, pushing each other to run faster to beat each other at the end line on our school astro.

We are so proud of all the athletes as they represented the school and themselves so well on the day. I hope we have as many enthusiastic athletes trying out.
